IRVIN ELECTED ACC CHAIRMAN

The Arizona Corporation Commission today elected Republican Commissioner Jim Irvin to the position of Chairman by a two to one vote. "I am honored to have this opportunity to serve the people of Arizona," Irvin said. "I care deeply about the important issues facing this Commission, and I want to move forward in a positive direction."

Irvin will serve as Chairman until January, 1999. He said that the most important issues facing the Commission during his tenure as Chairman are electric deregulation, telecommunications deregulation, and issues involving small water companies. "During the next few months, I will be developing an action plan to deal with these issues," Irvin said. Irvin expects to deliver a series of speeches around the state during the next few months, outlining his proposals.

"As we enter the 21st century, we must be careful to protect consumers and create a positive business environment. This will require creative thinking. We must break out of the traditional paradigms, which emphasize heavy government regulation, and explore new ways of unshackling markets. As Chairman, it is my responsibility to articulate a vision for the future."

Commissioner Renz Jennings said "I am counting on Jim Irvin to help us put personal issues aside, and get on with the important work that lies ahead for the Corporation Commission."

Chairman Irvin was elected to the Commission in 1996. His term will expire in January, 2003.
