Commissioners Name New Chairman |
PHOENIX - Commissioner Marc Spitzer was nominated by his fellow Commissioners to lead the newly-expanded five member regulatory panel. After recognizing the effective leadership of Chairman Bill Mundell, Commissioner Jim Irvin nominated Spitzer to the post of Chairman. Commissioners Jeff Hatch-Miller and Mike Gleason added their enthusiastic support of Spitzer and voted in favor of his selection as chair. |
All five Commissioners have an equal vote but the chairman traditionally casts the final vote. Outgoing Chairman Mundell encouraged Commissioner Spitzer to seek the chairmanship. The chairman calls the meetings to order, plays a leadership role in matters dealing with scheduling and agenda setting and is responsible for setting the tone and flow of Commission meetings. Mundell chose not to continue as chairman stating that he believes a two-year term for the chairmanship should become the practice and rule of the Commission. |
"I was pleased to be able to serve as chairman during a crucial time for the Commission," Mundell said. "I took the lead in quieting a lot of the acrimony that had marked the Commission in the past. I am proud that during my tenure we were able to retain and attract a highly professional staff. Our staff worked hard under my direction and I know that same professionalism, integrity and hard work on behalf of Arizona residents will continue under Chairman Spitzer's leadership." |
Commissioners Hatch-Miller and Gleason supported Spitzer's nomination as chairman, both citing positive experiences working alongside Spitzer during their overlapping terms in the Arizona House and Senate. |
Chairman Spitzer offered remarks regarding the tenure of Chairman Mundell and also summarized the past achievements of the Commission and outlined goals for the future. His remarks are attached. Remarks from Commissioner Irvin are attached as well. |
Spitzer was elected to the Commission in the 2000 general election and began his term in January 2001. |
